Female inventors – Russia, France and Susan top the lists

The UKIPO has issued a report, based on worldwide patent statistics, to assess whether the increase in women studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) is resulting in an increase in the number of female inventors.  Whilst the numbers of female inventors are relatively low, in the last fifteen years the percentage of female inventors has risen from about 7% to 11.5%.

Of the countries studied, France and Russia had the highest proportion of female inventors, with Japan, Korea and Germany at the bottom of the table.  The report also assesses the proportion of female inventors in different areas of technology.  As part of the statistical analysis, the top female inventor name in the UK came out as Susan and the top male name was David!
